Atlantic Book Reviews - Reading and Reviewing Atlantic Canadian Books
Yesterday at 11:24 AM · Nov 2019
I recently asked my poetry-loving bookish friends to recommend a few poetry titles for us to read and discuss at our January book club meeting. I am not well versed (pardon the pun) in poetry. I have read and enjoyed collections in the past, but they have been mostly works of children’s poetry and verse. I want to expand my poetry knowledge.
How timely that I should receive a “snail mail” package from New Brunswick poet, Donna Allard, just a few days after making my request of book club friends.
Donna so very kindly sent me a copy of her latest poetry collection COLDFIRE. I have spent the last two weeks reading one or two of Donna’s poems each night before turning off my bedside lamp and settling in to sleep. Oh, Donna, how varied my dreams became after reading your carefully chosen words. My teenage self disco danced through my dreams the night I read REMEMBERING YESTERDAY. In my dreams, I walked along the shore of my Nova Scotia childhood home after reading SACRED POND.
There is much for poetry veterans and newbies to enjoy. A diverse fullness of thoughts.
Thank you, #DonnaAllard for the gift of your book and your thoughts.
